日本（にほん）では、5月5日（ごがつ いつか）は、とくべつな日（ひ）です。この日は、「こどもの日」と「たんごのせっく」というイベントがあります。ちがうの？おなじ？いっしょに見てみましょう！😄

In Japan, May 5th is a special day. On this day, there are two events: "Kodomo no Hi" and "Tango no Sekku." Are they different? The same? Let’s take a look together! 😄

🧒こどもの日（ひ） 📅 いつ？：5月（がつ）5日（いつか） 📖 なにをする？

• 子（こ）どもがしあわせに、けんこうに育（そだ）ちますように！といのります。
  

• お母(かあ)さんにも「ありがとう」と思（おも）う日（ひ）です。👩💐
  

• 家族（かぞく）といっしょにすごす人（ひと）が多（おお）いです。

💡1948年（ねん）に「国（くに）の祝日（しゅくじつ）」になりました。男（おとこ）の子（こ）も女（おんな）の子（こ）もおいわいします！

• People pray for children's happiness and healthy growth.

• It’s also a day to show appreciation to mothers. 👩💐

• Many people spend time with their families. 💡Fun fact: It became a national holiday in 1948. Both boys and girls are celebrated!

📅 これも5月5日です！

たんごのせっくは、むかしからある伝統（でんとう）のイベントです。とくに、男（おとこ）の子（こ）のけんこうとせいちょう（成長）をいのります。女（おんな）の子（こ）がいても、かぞくをあらわす鯉（こい）のぼりをかざったり、かしわもちやちまきを食（た）べたりします。

🏯 Tango no Sekku (Boys’ Festival)

📅 It’s also on May 5th! Tango no Sekku is a traditional event from long time ago. It especially prays for the health and growth of boys. However, even families with girls also decorate with koi flags which are symbol of family and eat sweets like kashiwamochi and chimaki.

📖 なにをする？

• 🎏 鯉のぼり（こいのぼり）をかざります。
  

• 🪖 五月人形（ごがつ にんぎょう）や かぶとをかざります。
  

• 🛁 しょうぶ湯（ゆ）に入ります（おふろにしょうぶの葉（は）を入れます）。
  

• 🍡 かしわもち や ちまき を食べます。

  

  Chimaki and Kashiwa Mochi

📖 What do people do?

• 🎏 Decorate with koi streamers (koinobori).

• 🪖 Display warrior dolls and helmets.

• 🛁 Take a bath with iris leaves (shobu-yu).

• 🍡 Eat kashiwamochi and chimaki.

💡ポイント：この日は、武士（ぶし／samurai）文化のえいきょうがあります。鯉（こい）のぼりは、むかし武士（ぶし）がつかった「のぼりばた（のぼり旗（はた））」がルーツです。「鯉（こい）＋武士（ぶし）の旗（はた）」＝ 強（つよ）くて、かっこいい子（こ）どもになりますように、というねがいがあります！

💡Fun fact: This day is influenced by samurai culture. The koi-nobori has roots in the banners samurai once used. Koi (carp) + samurai banners = A wish for children to grow up strong and brave!

🎏どうして鯉（こい）のぼり？

鯉（こい）は、中国（ちゅうごく）の昔（むかし）の話（はなし）「登竜門（とうりゅうもん）」からきています。川（かわ）の中（なか）の大（おお）きな滝（たき）をのぼった鯉（こい）は、龍（りゅう）になります！

🎏 Why Koinobori (Koi streamers)? The carp comes from an old Chinese story called "Tōryūmon" (Climbing the Dragon Gate). A carp that climbs up a giant waterfall in a river becomes a dragon!

➡️ だから、「つよくなる」「がんばる」という意味（いみ）があります。こどもも鯉（こい）のように大（おお）きくなってほしい、というねがいがこめられています。🎏

➡️ Therefore, koi symbolize strength and perseverance.The wish is for children to grow big and strong, just like the carp. 🎏

🛡️どうして五月人形（ごがつにんぎょう）？

五月人形は、武士（ぶし）がつかっていた「よろい」や「かぶと」の形（かたち）をしています。

🛡️ Why Gogatsu Ningyo (May dolls)? May dolls are shaped like the armor and helmets used by samurai.

➡️ こどもが「びょうきにならない」「まもられますように」というねがいでかざります。

➡️ They are displayed with a wish for children to stay healthy and be protected.

🏠わたしの思（おも）い出（で） 🏠 My Memories

わたしの家（いえ）には、弟（おとうと）がいます。だから、毎年（まいとし）5月5日に、鯉（こい）のぼりと五月人形（ごがつにんぎょう）をかざりました。

学校（がっこう）の給食（きゅうしょく）で、かしわもちが（で）ました！でも、1人（ひとり）1つ（ひとつ）だけ…。ときどきジャンケンで、もう1つもらえるチャンスがありました。ジャンケンがよわいわたしは、いつもまけてしまいました…😢 だから、**自分（じぶん）でかしわもちを作（つく）って、たくさん食（た）べたい！と思（おも）いました🍡✨

I have a younger brother. So, every year on May 5th, we decorated with koi-nobori and May dolls.

At school lunch, we had kashiwamochi! But... only one per person. Sometimes there was a chance to win another one with rock-paper-scissors. I was bad at rock-paper-scissors and always lost... 😢 That's why I thought, "I want to make kashiwamochi myself and eat a lot!" 🍡✨
