The Star Festival (七夕, tanabata)- The Worlds's Most Romantic Traditional Event

What is Tanabata? Tanabata is based on a legend in China involving two actual stars many light years away from Earth-Vega in the constellation Lyra and Altair in Aquila. There are similar festivals in China and Korea. The story varies form place to place. Here is one of the version.

Legend

Once upon a time, there was a hard-working cattle man named Hikoboshi (彦星) , and young woman named Orihime (織姫) who was good at with weaving. As they fall in love to each other, they only enjoyed the time together and stopped working hard.

The king of heaven banishes them to stars on either side of the Milky Way. However, Hikoboshi and Orihime could not concentrate on working from grieving. So, the king allowed them to meet once a year - on 7th of July on the condition of their hard work.

What people do for Tanabata?

On tanabata, people write wishes on long narrow strips of origami paper known as tanzaku, and tie these to bamboo branches to make a wish on a star. Some people make meaningful decorations with origami. It is believed that these wishes will come true on the condition of your hard work.

This unique Japanese custom began during the Edo period (1603 to 1868), originating in the imperial court. At that time many people began learning at Terakoya (寺子屋) the place to receive tuition.
